Canton Storm is the 2011 South Farmington All-Star Classic 12U Champions!
Saturday’s first game was against the Livonia Eagles. Nick Sprosek and Jake Dattilio needed only 49 pitches and faced just 13 batters in 4 innings.
Offensively, the tournament started quickly with a home run by Jake O’Donnell on the 2nd pitch of the game. Triples by Josh Rubis & Nick Sprosek followed by a Josh Janovsky single made it 4-0 after the first inning. The offense continued in the second with Noah Haran, Justin Raylean, and O’Donnell hitting singles and then scoring. The inning ended at 7-0. The third was another productive inning for the Storm as we added 4 more runs. Rubis started with a double and Sprosek followed with another triple. There were also singles by Matt Brooks and Robert Barnes. The fourth inning saw a number of patient batters get walks. Those walks combined with a double from O’Donnell and a third triple of the game for Sprosek gave the Storm 4 more runs.
Saturday’s second game was against the Lakes Mud Dogs. Josh Janovsky started and went 4 innings throwing 79 pitches with 6 strike outs giving up only 2 runs. Erich Payne threw 41 pitches during the last 3 innings. He had 3 strike outs and gave up 1 run.
The Storm started off slow not scoring through two innings. The third inning brought us 3 runs on singles by Matt Lessell and Justin Raylean that was followed by a triple by Jake O’Donnell. The Storm’s big inning came in the 5th. Josh Rubis and Josh Janovsky split 4 RBIs on their two singles in a six run inning. Our final run in the last inning came from a Robert Barnes single and a Chase Timko double. Welcome Back Chase – we’re glad to have you back from the DL.
Sunday’s first game was against the Lakes Wolverines. Erich Payne started and threw 3 innings, 47 pitches, 6 strike outs and gave up 1 run. Jake Dattilio threw 21 pitches with 3 strike outs through 2 innings.
Offensively the team started putting runs on the board right away with singles from Payne, Nick Sprosek, and Dattilio to make it 3-0 after 1. In the second inning a single by Justin Raylean and a double by Chase Timko added 3 more and made it 6-0. 3 more runs came in the 3rd with hits by Sprosek, Josh Janovsky, Noah Haran, and Robert Barnes. Hits from Jake O’Donnell, Timko, and Sprosek added 2 runs in the 4th. That was all that was needed for the Storm to win 11-1.
Having finished the first game early – the team had time to eat lunch at Doc’s.
Nick Sprosek and Jake O’Donnell threw against the Commerce Little League team in game four. They threw a combined 78 pitches over 5 innings with 5 strikeouts while allowing 4 runs (only 1 earned run).
The offense started early again with a single from O’Donnell who was scored on an Erich Payne double. Payne scored on a Sprosek single and Sprosek scored on a Josh Janovsky single. One run was added in the 2nd when Matt Brooks started the inning with a single. The only other hit of the inning was a single by Robert Barnes. 2 runs were scored in the third off a lone hit by Josh Rubis. Justin Raylean’s sole single along with a sacrifice fly by Robert Barnes added 2 in the fourth. The Storm surged in the 5th with Payne leading off with a single and Sprosek scoring both Payne and Rubis with a double. Three consecutive singles by Janovsky, Jake Dattilio and Brooks helped to add a total of 6 for the inning. The final was 14-4.
After a very brief break the championship game brought together the two remaining unbeaten teams of the weekend. Erich Payne started and threw 57 pitches over 3 innings with 2 strikeouts while allowing only 2 runs. Josh Janovsky threw the last 4 innings with 68 pitches, 4 strike outs and allowing 5 runs.
The Storm started off slow but the bats woke up in the second. Josh Rubis led off with a double, Janovsky scored Rubis with a single. Robert Barnes followed with two RBIs. The fourth inning started with singles by Rubis and Nick Sprosek. Hits by Matt Brooks and Barnes helped to add 3 runs in the fourth. A lead-off walk in the fifth was followed by an RBI single by Payne to put one more on the board. The Storm opened things up a bit in the 6th with three consecutive hits - 2 singles by Janovksy and Jake Dattilio were followed by a RBI double by Brooks. An RBI by Noah Haran added the third run of the inning. The final was 10-7.
Another great weekend spent on the baseball diamond!
